Reconstruction can be performed at the same time as the mastectomy, thus avoiding the trauma of losing a breast. In other cases, depending on the diagnosis, it is better to wait for a while before reconstruction.

The surgical procedure can be performed by inserting an expander to stretch the tissues progressively, until the desired volume is achieved; it is then replaced by the final prosthesis. Another possibility is to use tissue from other parts of the body.
