What is micropigmentation removal?

Micropigmentation removal is a treatment to remove poorly executed micropigmentation or microblading work, colour shifts (red, blue, green), pigmentations that do not satisfy the patient, or results of malpractice. At Instituto de Benito, it is performed using two complementary methods: laser or dermograph, and the choice between one and the other depends on the type of pigment, the area treated, and the patient's objective.

Unlike clinics that offer only one of the two techniques, María Castany works with both and chooses the most suitable for each case after evaluation. This avoids having to send the patient to another centre when the laser is not the best option or when the laser is indeed the best choice and is not being utilised.

The two removal methods

Laser removal (€90 per session)

The laser works by selective absorption of wavelengths according to the colour of the pigment. It is the fastest and lowest cost option per session, and works particularly well with well-executed black or dark pigments (those commonly found in eyeliners and many microbladings).

Eliminación con láser (90€ por sesión)

Dermograph removal (€120 per session)

Dermograph removal applies a pigment extraction solution of American origin, legalised in the European Union, using the same device used for micropigmentation. The solution encapsulates the pigment particles and expels them to the skin surface, where they form a small scab the colour of the pigment that falls off on its own in 7–10 days.

What does micropigmentation removal involve?

The treatment, whether by laser or dermograph, is planned as a protocol of progressive sessions. The number of sessions depends on the type of pigment, the depth of the original work, the time elapsed, and the individual response of the patient. Usually, between 2 and 6 sessions are needed, spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

01

Personalised assessment:

valoracion personalizada

Before the treatment, María Castany evaluates the type of previous micropigmentation (microblading, dermograph, semi-permanent, permanent), the colour and composition of the pigment (if known), the time since the original work, the condition of the skin, and the patient's objectives. Here it is decided whether to use laser or dermograph. If the micropigmentation is very recent (less than 6 months), it may be recommended to wait for it to lose natural saturation before starting.

02

Test if applicable

Micropigmentación test

When there are doubts about the pigment's response to the chosen method, a test is carried out on a small area before treating the entire piece. This allows for predicting the result and the approximate number of sessions.

03

Treatment preparation

preparación intervencion

The area must be clean, without makeup or creams. Avoid sun exposure in the 14 days prior. Do not undergo other treatments in the area in the previous 4 weeks.

04

In-clinic treatment

Tratamiento en consulta

The session lasts between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the extent of the area and the method. Surface anaesthetic cream is applied. For laser, specific eye protection is used. For dermograph, sterile single-use needles are used at a calibrated depth.

05

Second session and progressive results

Segunda sesión y resultados progresivos

Between sessions, in both methods, the skin forms a small scab the colour of the removed pigment which falls off on its own in 7–10 days. Do not scratch or pick it. Subsequent sessions are planned according to progress.

Pre and post removal

Before the treatment

  • Mandatory prior technical assessment.
  • 48 hours before: avoid vasodilators (alcohol, AAS, ibuprofen).
  • No direct sun exposure in the area for 14 days.
  • Do not undergo peels, facial laser, microneedling or other treatments in the area for 4 weeks prior.
  • Attend with the area clean, without makeup, creams or protectors.
  • If the micropigmentation to be removed is less than 6 months old, mention it: it may be recommended to wait.

Pre and post removal

After the treatment

  • Immediate recovery: daily routine can be resumed the same day.
  • 24–48h of redness and mild swelling.
  • Appearance of a micro-scab the colour of the removed pigment between days 3 and 7. This is the desired effect of the treatment: you are literally seeing the pigment being extracted. Do not touch, scratch, or peel. It falls off on its own.
  • Do not wet the area for 7 days.
  • Do not apply makeup to the area for 14 days.
  • No sun exposure for 30 days and mandatory 50+ sunscreen for 3 months.
  • Apply prescribed healing cream several times a day for 10 days.
  • Review at 6–8 weeks to schedule the next session if necessary.

What is the price of micropigmentation removal treatment

90€

The price of micropigmentation removal at Instituto de Benito depends on the method:

  • Price per session with laser removal: 90€
  • Price per session with dermograph removal: 120€
  • Body tattoos To be assessed in consultation (depends on size, location, colours)

The number of sessions required depends on the type of pigment, the age of the work and the individual response of the patient. Usually between 2 and 6 sessions are needed.

The specialist decides in the initial assessment which method is suitable for each case. If during the treatment it is seen that it is advisable to change method (for example, finishing with dermograph what the laser does not completely remove), the plan is adjusted.

Are you suitable for a micropigmentation removal treatment?

  • 01

    Poorly performed micropigmentation or microblading

Ideal if your previous work does not satisfy you in shape, symmetry or saturation.

  • 02

    Colour shift

Recommended if the pigment has shifted to red, blue, green, grey or another undesired tone.

  • 03

    Work too saturated or intense

Indicated when micropigmentation was applied with excess pigment or depth.

  • 04

    Design change

If you want to redesign the shape of your eyebrow, lip or eye and the current pigmentation prevents it.

  • 05

    Failure of previous laser treatment

If you have tried laser removal and the pigment has oxidised or has not fully come out: the dermograph recovers what the laser left.

  • 06

Definitive removal without intention to repigment

If you simply want to restore your area without any pigment.

Risks and contraindications

The removal of micropigmentation, whether by laser or dermograph, is a safe treatment when performed in a medical-aesthetic centre with certified materials and by trained professionals. However, it requires clinical selection.

Absolute contraindications

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Micropigmentation done less than 6 months ago (risk of scarring complications).
  • Uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Active treatment with anticoagulants (consult with a doctor).
  • Autoimmune diseases in active phase.
  • Known tendency to keloids in the area.
  • Treatment with oral isotretinoin in the previous 6 months.
  • Tattoos with a history of allergic reaction.

Common side effects (mild and transient)

  • Redness and swelling for 24–48h.
  • Scab the colour of the removed pigment for 7–10 days.
  • Sensitivity and itching during healing.

Uncommon effects

  • Residual scar in the area (more likely if the scab is scratched during healing).
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in high phototypes.
  • Incomplete removal when the original pigment is very deep or of uncharacterisable quality. In these cases, combining both methods is usually the solution.

Frequently asked questions about micropigmentation

How much does it cost to remove micropigmentation?

€90 per session with laser, €120 per session with dermograph. Body tattoos are assessed in consultation because the price depends on the size and characteristics.

Which of the two methods is better for my case?

It depends on the colour of the pigment, the area and the objective. The laser is more effective and economical on well-executed black or dark pigments. The dermograph is the option of choice when there are shifted pigments, non-black or when the laser has already failed. The final decision is made at the initial assessment.

How many sessions are needed?

Usually between 2 and 6 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart. The exact number is determined as we go.

Why is the dermograph more expensive than the laser?

Because the product applied (American extraction solution) is more costly, the session requires more time for application area by area, and the technical precision is greater. In return, it works on pigments that the laser cannot remove.

What if I have tried laser unsuccessfully at another centre?

It is one of the clearest indications for using the dermograph. The product recovers what the laser has left, including chromatic shifts caused by the laser's own oxidation.

Is it painful?

It is practically painless with surface anaesthetic cream. The sensation is similar to a micropigmentation session.

When will I see the results?

After each session, during the following 7–10 days, you will see a small scab form the colour of the pigment being extracted. This is the desired effect in both methods.

Can I repigment afterwards?

Yes, once the area has completely healed (at least 8 weeks after the last removal session).

What if I accidentally scratch the scab?

There is a risk of scarring or hyperpigmentation. Therefore, it is essential to adhere to the postoperative care.

Is the pigment removed 100%?

Usually yes, although it depends on the type of original pigment, its depth and age. Some very deep pigments may leave a minimal residue that is no longer visible to the naked eye.

Does removing micropigmentation leave a mark?

No, if the postoperative care is followed. When performed and cared for properly, neither technique leaves a visible scar.

Is body tattoo removal done here?

Yes, but it is assessed during consultation as the price depends on size, colours, age and area. It is not charged per standard session.
