What is Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is a surgical procedure aimed at eliminating excess gland and/or fat in the male chest, restoring a firm, flat, and proportionate appearance to the torso, with a natural and harmonious result.

What types of gynecomastia surgery exist?
Fatty gynecomastia (liposuction)
Indicated when the increase in male breast size is mainly due to excess fat. It is corrected through liposuction, achieving a flatter and more defined chest with minimal scars.
Glandular gynecomastia (gland removal)
Recommended when there is an excess of mammary gland tissue. It requires direct surgical removal of the gland through a small incision around the areola.
Mixed gynecomastia (combined)
It is the most common form. It combines excess fat and gland, so the treatment includes liposuction and gland removal to achieve a flat, firm, and natural result.
What does Gynecomastia involve at IdB?
The procedure is performed after a personalized prior assessment and may include liposuction to remove localized fat and/or the removal of glandular tissue through small discreet incisions, usually around the areola. A flatter, firmer, and more proportionate chest, with a natural masculine contour. The final result is seen between 3 and 6 months, when the tissues have fully adapted.
Does gynecomastia surgery hurt a lot?
Discomfort is usually mild or moderate and is effectively controlled with medication and advanced recovery protocols. Most patients resume their usual routine in 7 to 10 days.
Can gynecomastia return after surgery?
Under normal conditions, the removed glandular tissue does not grow back. However, significant hormonal changes or weight gain could affect the result over time.
What are the risks of gynecomastia surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery is a safe procedure when performed in specialized centers and by expert surgeons. However, like all surgeries, it involves certain potential risks.

Most common risks (generally mild)
- Hematoma or bleeding: accumulation of blood under the skin; usually resolves with medical control or drainage.
- Temporary swelling and discomfort: normal during the first few days; decreases progressively.
- Sensitivity changes: changes in nipple or chest sensitivity, almost always temporary.
- Mild asymmetries: small differences during the healing process.
- Seroma: fluid accumulation that can be easily reabsorbed or drained.
Less common risks
- Postoperative infection: uncommon thanks to aseptic measures and preventive antibiotics.
- Opening of stitches or delayed healing: may be due to skin tension or individual factors.
- Reaction to anesthesia or surgical materials.
- Irregular skin retraction or contour irregularities.
- Need for surgical touch-up in very specific cases.
Will there be visible scars?
The incisions are small and strategically located, usually around the areola or in less visible areas, so over time they are usually almost imperceptible.
When can I exercise or sunbathe?
Exercise: progressively from 4–6 weeks. Sun or beach: after 8 weeks, always with high sun protection on the scars.
Can I combine gynecomastia surgery with other treatments?
Yes. In some cases, it can be combined with liposuction of other areas or other body procedures, always after medical evaluation.
What happens if I gain or lose weight afterward?
Moderate weight changes usually do not significantly alter the result. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve the result in the long term.
How long does full recovery take?
Most patients resume their normal life in 7–10 days, although the final result consolidates around 3 months.
