What is a thread lift?
A thread lift is an aesthetic medicine procedure for facial rejuvenation that tightens, firms and redefines the face without the need for surgery. It involves placing absorbable threads under the skin that reposition the tissues and provide an immediate lifting effect, while gradually stimulating the body's natural collagen production. The result is a visible improvement in skin laxity and the facial contour, with a natural, gradual and harmonious look.
Types of threads, according to what they do
Smooth or collagen-inducing threads
These are fine threads with no anchoring that are placed to form a mesh. They do not pull: their effect is to improve skin quality by stimulating collagen production, so the skin gradually gains firmness and density.
They are indicated when the issue is a loss of firmness and skin quality, without sagging that needs to be repositioned. They are absorbable, usually made of polydioxanone (PDO).
Lifting threads (cog or barbed threads)
They have small cogs or anchors along the thread that grip the tissue and allow it to be repositioned upward. These are the threads that produce the tightening effect visible right away.

What does a thread lift involve?
A thread lift is performed in the doctor's office. It is a minimally invasive procedure that requires neither an operating room nor general anesthesia. It is carried out under local anesthesia and with all medical safeguards, allowing the patient to return to normal life almost immediately.

Thread lift, Ultherapy or facelift?

Thread lifts
They reposition the tissue by pulling on it, with an effect that is visible right away. They are indicated for mild or moderate skin laxity, when the facial contour or jawline has lost definition but the skin is still of good quality. They are absorbable, so the effect is temporary.
Ultherapy
It does not pull on the tissue: it stimulates collagen at depth with focused ultrasound, and the skin tightens gradually over the following months. A single session, with no needles and no recovery time. It is the option when the aim is to improve firmness without an abrupt change, or when you want to start with the least invasive approach.
Facelift
This is surgery: it removes the excess skin and repositions the deep layers. It is the only thing that corrects advanced sagging, and also the only one whose result lasts for years. No aesthetic medicine treatment replaces it: when surgery is what is indicated, we tell you so in consultation.
They can be combined
They are not mutually exclusive alternatives. It is common to work on skin quality with a collagen inducer and, on top of that, reposition with threads. What makes no sense is replacing an indicated surgery with a succession of treatments that will not achieve the same thing.
Who is not a suitable candidate: contraindications for thread lifts
Although a thread lift is a minimally invasive treatment with a favorable safety profile when properly indicated, there are situations in which it is contraindicated or should be postponed. What are the risks of a thread lift?
An outpatient treatment, with discomfort that lasts a few days
Threads are placed in the doctor's office and you can return to your routine the same day. The discomfort that appears afterward is common and temporary, but it is worth knowing about: almost all next-day calls are about things that were expected.
Expected effects in the first few days
- Small folds or dimples in the skin right after the threads are placed, which even out over the following days.
- Discomfort when making facial expressions or opening your mouth wide while the threads settle.
- Swelling, a feeling of tightness and small bruises at the entry points.
Less common effects
- A thread that can be felt or seen under the skin, or that protrudes at the entry point. This is resolved in the office.
