What is lobuloplasty?
Lobuloplasty is a simple surgery under local anesthesia that reconstructs earlobes torn or elongated by heavy earrings or ear gauges, leaving a minimal scar hidden in the natural crease that restores symmetry and freshness to the ears without anyone noticing you have had surgery.
At Instituto de Benito, lobuloplasty is performed by the same team of surgeons specialized in facial surgery who carry out more complex procedures. This means a 30-minute operation receives the same level of planning, precision and post-op follow-up as any other facial surgery we perform.
Torn or split earlobe repair
Indicated for earlobes fully or partially torn by heavy earrings or accidental pulls.
Reduction or shortening of an elongated earlobe
Indicated for earlobes that are too large, long or droopy, whether due to aging or progressive stretching.
Reconstruction of a deformed or stretched earlobe
Indicated for earlobes deformed by ear gauges, stretching or trauma.
What does a lobuloplasty at IdB involve?
Lobuloplasty is a minor surgery that begins with local anesthesia to numb the earlobe, allowing the surgeon to clean and freshen the edges of the torn or overstretched tissue. Through small incisions, the scarred skin of the old piercing hole is removed and the continuity of the earlobe is rebuilt by joining the fresh edges with very fine internal and external sutures. The procedure, which usually takes about 30 minutes per ear, ends with the application of an antiseptic and a small dressing, allowing the patient to go home immediately with a restored, firm ear contour.
Personalized medical assessment
Before lobuloplasty, the consultation takes place with the surgeon who will perform the procedure. During this visit, the condition of the earlobe (tear, stretching or deformity) is assessed to define the most suitable technique and achieve a natural result. To book the appointment, a prior payment of €80 is required. If you cannot travel, the first visit can also be done by video call with the surgeon who would operate on you: it costs €50, which is deducted if you decide to have surgery.

Lobuloplasty at Instituto de Benito starts from €1,200, varying according to whether one or both earlobes are treated, the type of damage to be corrected, the technique used and the tests and follow-up included, and is tailored to each patient.

What are the risks of lobuloplasty?
What determines the result is when the earlobe is re-pierced
Lobuloplasty is a small, well-tolerated surgery performed under local anesthesia. The most common reason for the problem to recur is not the surgery, but re-piercing the earlobe before the scar has fully matured, or doing it right on top of the scar.
When you can wear an earring again, and at which point on the earlobe, is indicated at your follow-up visit. This is not a minor detail: it is what maintains the result.
Expected effects
- Slight swelling and local discomfort during the first few days.
- A pink scar for a few weeks, which gradually fades.
- Stitches that are removed at the follow-up visit.
Less common risks
- Hypertrophic or keloid scar. The earlobe is an area prone to this, especially in people who have had keloids before.
- A notch or step in the edge of the earlobe.
- Asymmetry between the two earlobes.
- Local infection.
- A new tear if the earlobe is pierced too soon or over the scar.
Who is not a suitable candidate: contraindications for lobuloplasty

- Temporary swelling and discomfort: normal during the first few days; they gradually subside.
- Changes in sensation: numbness or increased sensitivity in the area, almost always temporary.
- Minor asymmetries: these may appear during the healing process.
- Seroma: a buildup of fluid that is reabsorbed or easily drained.
Uncommon risks
- Post-operative infection: very uncommon thanks to aseptic measures and preventive antibiotics.
- Stitches opening or delayed healing.
- Allergic reaction or intolerance to the anesthesia or surgical materials.
- Visible or thickened scar (uncommon and treatable).
How long do the results last?
The results of lobuloplasty are permanent, provided no new tear or trauma occurs.
When can I exercise or go in the sun?
Exercise: after 7–10 days (intense sport, 2–3 weeks). Sun or beach: after 3–4 weeks, with adequate sun protection on the scar.
Is the scar noticeable?
No. The scar is usually very discreet and practically imperceptible once the healing process is complete.
Can I combine this surgery with other treatments?
Yes, it can be combined with other facial or cosmetic surgery procedures, always subject to a personalized medical assessment.
What happens if my weight changes after lobuloplasty?
Weight changes do not affect the result of lobuloplasty.
How long does full recovery take?
Most patients return to normal life in 1 to 3 days, although full healing takes around 3–4 weeks.
Is lobuloplasty covered by public healthcare or health insurance in Spain?
As elective cosmetic surgery, lobuloplasty is not usually included in Spanish public healthcare coverage or in private health insurance policies. Cases of repair after accidental trauma (an unintentional tear) may be assessed within the public system, although with the usual waiting times. If you have questions about your specific coverage, check directly with your insurer before your visit.
