Mommy Makeover: post-pregnancy tummy and breast surgery

Thinking about getting a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover combines, in a single operation, the procedures you need after childbirth and breastfeeding, usually a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and breast surgery, with just one anesthesia and one recovery.

It is recommended to wait at least six months after you finish breastfeeding: until then, the hormonal and anatomical changes of pregnancy continue to alter the tissues and the risk of complications is higher. The date is decided at the medical consultation, once your weight is stable.

What is a Mommy Makeover or post-pregnancy surgery?

A mommy makeover is a set of surgical procedures that are combined to restore the shape of the body after pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is designed to treat the most common changes, such as loss of breast firmness, abdominal sagging or localized fat deposits.

It is planned individually according to each patient's needs and may include breast surgery, abdominal surgery or liposuction, always aiming to improve body proportions and achieve a natural, balanced result.

Types of Mommy Makeover:

Body Mommy Makeover

Focused mainly on the abdomen and body contour. It usually combines a tummy tuck and liposculpture to remove sagging skin, repair the abdominal muscles and redefine the figure after pregnancy.

Mommy Makeover corporal

Breast Mommy Makeover

Focused on restoring the shape and volume of the breasts after motherhood. It may include breast augmentation, a breast lift (mastopexy) or a breast reduction, depending on each patient's needs, sometimes combined with gentle body treatments.

Mommy Makeover mamario

Full Mommy Makeover

This is the most comprehensive and most common approach. It combines abdominal surgery, breast surgery and body contouring (liposculpture), addressing as a whole the main changes left by pregnancy to achieve a harmonious, balanced result across the entire body.

What does the Mommy Makeover process involve?

A Mommy Makeover is not a single surgery, but a personalized protocol of combined procedures designed to reverse the physical changes that occur after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Its main goal is to treat at the same time the three areas that change the most: the abdomen, the breasts and localized fat deposits, allowing a complete transformation in a single operation.

01

Consultation and understanding the mommy makeover

Valoración personalizada

The process begins with a personalized consultation with the surgeon who will perform your operation. At this visit, the changes that have occurred after pregnancy are assessed, the areas to be treated (breasts, abdomen, body contour) are analyzed and a fully tailored surgical plan is designed according to your anatomy and your goals. To book the appointment, a payment of €80 is required in advance. If you cannot travel, the first visit can also be done by video call with the surgeon who would operate on you: it costs €50, which is deducted if you decide to have surgery.

02

Preparing for the surgery

Preparación de la intervención

Before surgery, the procedure is carefully planned, defining which techniques will be combined (tummy tuck, breast surgery, liposculpture), the order in which they will be performed and all the details needed to achieve a harmonious and safe result.

Mommy Makeover with Synapta®: a more manageable recovery

A mommy makeover combines several surgeries, and its recovery has been associated with swelling, a feeling of tightness in the abdomen and breasts, and tiredness. Medical protocols now make it possible to approach that recovery differently.

At Instituto de Benito we apply Synapta®, a protocol designed to support the body through its recovery process after a mommy makeover, helping to make the experience more manageable and controlled.

How is recovery after a mommy makeover improved?

Beyond the conventional use of medication, this approach focuses on the body's neurophysiological response after surgery. Through specific techniques, it aims to modulate inflammation, reduce tissue tension and improve the body's adaptation to the surgical change.

  • Less tightness in the abdomen and breasts: Because several surgeries are combined, the tissues in the treated areas swell and can feel tight during the first few weeks. The protocol helps reduce that tension gradually.
  • Improved tissue environment: Tissue oxygenation and drainage are promoted, which helps to reduce initial swelling and optimize the healing process.
  • Gradual, functional recovery: The goal is not to speed things up artificially, but to support the body so that recovery is more balanced, allowing you to return to your daily routine gradually and safely.
These protocols are part of a process in which post-operative well-being matters as much as the aesthetic design. Each case is assessed individually to tailor the instructions to each patient.

*Synapta® is included in surgeries performed in Barcelona.

Before and after surgery: Mommy Makeover pre-op and recovery

Before surgery

Before a Mommy Makeover, a personalized medical consultation is essential to study your case, analyze the changes after pregnancy and design a fully tailored surgical plan.

This phase includes:

  • Full medical history and physical examination
  • The necessary preoperative medical tests
  • Detailed assessment of the abdomen, breasts and body contour
  • Definition of the techniques to be combined (tummy tuck, breast surgery, liposculpture)
  • Instructions on medication, smoking, diet and habits before surgery

You will also receive all the recommendations you need to arrive at your surgery as safely and calmly as possible.

Before surgery

After surgery

After a Mommy Makeover, a period of gradual recovery begins, during which:

  • It is normal to have swelling, a feeling of tightness, tiredness and general discomfort during the first few days
  • You will need to wear the compression garments and post-surgical bras indicated by your surgeon
  • Medication will be prescribed to manage discomfort and support recovery
  • Medical check-ups will make it possible to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing
  • Your return to daily activity will be gradual, depending on your progress and medical advice

In Barcelona we apply the Synapta® protocol to make the post-op period more manageable.

Are you a good candidate for post-pregnancy surgery or a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is indicated for women who wish to regain their figure after pregnancy, correcting the changes that tend to appear in the abdomen, breasts and body contour when these cannot be resolved with diet, exercise or non-surgical treatments.

It is a treatment aimed at improving the shape of the body and restoring firmness and proportion to the figure, with a result in keeping with each woman's anatomy.

It is especially suitable if:

  • 01

You have had one or more pregnancies

And you notice abdominal sagging, changes in your breasts or a loss of body definition that you are unable to correct.

  • 02

    Your abdomen has lost firmness

When there is excess skin, sagging or separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis).

  • 03

Your breasts have changed after motherhood

If there is loss of volume, sagging or breast deflation and you want to restore their shape and position.

  • 04

    You have stubborn localized fat

When there are areas that do not respond to diet or exercise and affect the harmony of your figure.

  • 05

    You have finished having children

A Mommy Makeover is indicated when no further pregnancies are planned, in order to preserve the result over the long term.

  • 06

You are looking for a comprehensive, lasting change

If you want an overall improvement of your body in a single planned operation, with a harmonious and personalized approach.

Who is NOT a candidate: Mommy Makeover contraindications

Although a Mommy Makeover makes it possible to comprehensively correct the changes caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight fluctuations, not all patients are suitable candidates. Because several operations are combined in a single surgical session, patient selection must be especially rigorous. At Instituto de Benito, the indication is always based on medical and safety criteria, above any aesthetic consideration. A good candidate is defined not only by her wish to regain her figure, but by her state of health, the stability of her weight and realistic expectations about the result.

ContraindicaciónMotivo
Current pregnancy or active breastfeedingThe hormonal and anatomical changes of pregnancy and breastfeeding alter the tissues and increase the risk of complications. It is recommended to wait at least 6 months after you finish breastfeeding and regain body stability.
Pregnancy planned in the short termAlthough it is not an absolute contraindication, a new pregnancy can change the abdomen and breasts again, compromising the aesthetic result obtained. It is advisable to have the surgery once you have completed your family.
Unstable body weight or ongoing weight lossSignificant weight fluctuations can affect the result of the surgery. It is recommended to maintain a stable weight for at least 6 months before the operation.
Significant obesity or high body mass indexA high BMI increases the risk of anesthesia-related problems, thrombosis, infections, healing problems and general complications. It may be advisable to reach a healthier weight before surgery.
Uncontrolled systemic diseasesPoorly controlled diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, heart failure, severe lung disease or other conditions increase surgical risk and must be stabilized beforehand.
Active infection, local or systemicAny infectious process increases the risk of wound infection, seromas and poor healing. Surgery must be postponed until it has fully resolved.
Severe coagulation disordersThey raise the risk of bleeding during surgery, hematomas and postoperative complications. They require a specific hematological assessment.
Treatment with anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugsThis is not an absolute contraindication, but it requires adjustment or temporary suspension, always under the supervision of the prescribing doctor and in coordination with the surgical team.
Active smokingNicotine reduces the blood supply to the tissues and significantly increases the risk of skin necrosis, wound dehiscence, infection and delayed healing. It is recommended to stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery.
Active autoimmune diseasesConditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma can affect healing and the inflammatory response. The indication must be individualized together with the relevant specialist.
Body dysmorphic disorder or unrealistic expectationsWhen the motivation stems from a body image disorder or from expectations that are impossible to meet, surgery will not resolve the dissatisfaction. These cases require a prior psychological assessment.
Unstable psychological state or uncontrolled psychiatric disordersRecovery and satisfaction with the result also depend on adequate emotional stability. It is advisable to stabilize the clinical situation before considering cosmetic surgery.
Active drug use or uncontrolled alcoholismThese circumstances increase anesthetic risk, make recovery more difficult and can compromise compliance with postoperative care.
Recent surgeries or unresolved surgical complicationsThe presence of infections, seromas, hematomas or healing problems arising from a previous surgery makes it necessary to wait until they have fully resolved before a new operation.
Complex abdominal hernias or abdominal wall conditions that have not been assessedThey must be evaluated beforehand in order to plan the appropriate treatment and determine whether they can be corrected during the operation or require a different strategy.
High thromboembolic riskA personal history of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or clotting disorders requires an individualized evaluation, since a Mommy Makeover usually involves longer operating times.
Inability to follow post-operative careRecovery calls for relative rest, the use of compression garments, limited physical effort and medical check-ups. When this care cannot be ensured, surgery should be reconsidered.

Risks and possible side effects of a Mommy Makeover

One of the main advantages of a Mommy Makeover is that it makes it possible to correct, in a single operation, the changes that pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight fluctuations cause in the abdomen, breasts and body contour. However, because several surgical procedures are combined in the same session, it requires especially rigorous planning and proper patient selection.

At Instituto de Benito, safety is always the priority. The operation is performed in an accredited operating room, with continuous monitoring and anesthesia administered by an anesthesiologist, following specific protocols to minimize the risk of complications during and after surgery.

If, after the operation, you experience severe pain that does not improve with the prescribed medication, a fever above 38 °C, a sudden increase in abdominal or breast volume, significant bleeding, difficulty breathing, chest pain, excessive swelling of one leg, discharge from the wounds or any sudden worsening of your general condition, you should contact the clinic immediately or go to the nearest emergency department. Most serious complications can be treated effectively when they are detected early.

Expected, mild reactions

These effects are part of the normal recovery process and should not be considered complications:

  • Moderate pain and a feeling of tension in the abdomen and/or breasts during the first few days, generally controlled with the prescribed pain medication.
  • Swelling and edema in the operated areas, especially during the first 2–4 weeks.
  • Bruising or ecchymosis that gradually disappears over the following weeks.
  • A feeling of abdominal tightness, especially when the muscles are repaired (plication of the rectus abdominis muscles).
  • Temporary decrease in sensation in the abdomen, breasts or areas treated with liposuction, with gradual recovery over the following months.
  • Fatigue and limited mobility during the first few days, especially when getting up or walking.
  • Scars that are initially pink or firm and continue to mature for up to 12–18 months.
  • Temporary asymmetries related to swelling, which usually correct themselves as recovery progresses.

These reactions are part of the usual course of recovery. The return to office-based activities usually takes place between two and three weeks, while intense exercise and significant physical effort are usually delayed for six to eight weeks, depending on the procedures performed.

Less common effects

There is a second group of issues that, although generally not serious, are worth knowing about:

  • Seroma, or a buildup of fluid under the skin, especially after a tummy tuck or extensive liposuction, which may require drainage in the office.
  • Significant hematoma requiring surgical evacuation.
  • Delayed healing or partial opening of a wound, especially in smokers or patients with diabetes.
  • Hypertrophic or keloid scarring in people who are prone to it.
  • Body contour irregularities or minor asymmetries that may occasionally require a secondary touch-up.
  • Localized swelling that persists for several months, especially after liposuction.
  • Prolonged changes in skin sensation in the abdomen or breasts, which in a minority of patients may not fully recover.
  • Fat necrosis or small areas of hardened fatty tissue, usually managed with clinical follow-up.

Most of these situations can be resolved with regular check-ups and conservative treatment, and a further operation is rarely needed.

Uncommon complications

Like any major surgery, a Mommy Makeover carries potential complications that every patient should be aware of before signing the informed consent:

  • Postoperative bleeding or hematoma requiring a return to the operating room.
  • Infection of the surgical wounds or deep tissues, generally uncommon when strict aseptic protocols are followed.
  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism, risks inherent to any surgery of a certain length under general anesthesia, whose incidence is reduced through antithrombotic prophylaxis and early mobilization.
  • Complications related to general anesthesia, assessed and minimized during the preoperative work-up by the anesthesiology team.
  • Healing problems or skin necrosis, especially associated with smoking, vascular disorders or excessive tension on the tissues.
  • Aesthetic results that require additional procedures to optimize symmetry or contours once recovery is complete.
  • If breast surgery with implants is included, there may be specific risks such as capsular contracture, implant malposition, implant rupture or periprosthetic infection, which will be explained during the informed consent process.
  • If extensive liposuction is performed, contour irregularities, changes in sensation or, in exceptional cases, complications related to fat removal may occur.

Mommy Makeover frequently asked questions

How soon after giving birth can I have a Mommy Makeover?

It is recommended to wait at least six months after you finish breastfeeding: until then, the hormonal and anatomical changes of pregnancy continue to alter the tissues and the risk of complications is higher. The date is decided at the medical consultation, once your weight is stable.

What results can I expect?

An overall improvement in your figure, with a firmer abdomen, more proportionate breasts and a more harmonious body contour. The changes can be seen from the first few weeks, but full recovery comes between 3 and 6 months, when the tissues have fully adapted and the swelling has gone.

Is a Mommy Makeover painful?

Discomfort is usually moderate and is well controlled with medication. In Barcelona we also apply the Synapta® protocol to make recovery more manageable.

Can I breastfeed after a Mommy Makeover?

In most cases, yes. Current breast surgery techniques usually preserve the mammary gland and the milk ducts, although this is always assessed individually according to the type of breast surgery performed.

What are the risks of a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a safe operation when performed in specialized centers and by accredited surgeons but, like any surgery, it involves potential risks that you should be aware of.

At Instituto de Benito, safety is the priority and all procedures are performed under strict medical and monitoring protocols.

Most common risks (and generally mild)

  • Swelling and bruising: normal during the first few weeks.
  • Pain or a feeling of tightness or pressure: temporary and controllable with medication.
  • Seroma: a buildup of fluid that can be reabsorbed or easily drained.
  • Temporary changes in sensation.
  • Minor contour irregularities while the tissues are adapting.

Uncommon risks

  • Post-operative infection.
  • Delayed healing or small stitches opening.
  • Adverse reaction to anesthesia.
  • More marked asymmetries or the need for a touch-up in specific cases.

How long do the results last?

The results are very long-lasting. The repaired abdomen and improved body contour are maintained over time if you keep a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.

When can I exercise or go in the sun?

Exercise: gentle activity from 3–4 weeks; intense exercise from 6–8 weeks. Sun or beach: after 8 weeks, always with high sun protection on the scars.

What is the difference between a full and a partial Mommy Makeover?

A full Mommy Makeover combines the abdomen, breasts and body contouring. A partial one may focus only on the abdomen or only on the breasts, depending on each patient's needs.

Can I combine this surgery with other treatments?

Yes. A Mommy Makeover is already a combination of surgeries, but in some cases it can be tailored even further to each woman's specific needs.

What happens if I lose or gain weight afterward?

Moderate weight changes do not usually alter the result significantly. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve the results for longer.

How long does full recovery take?

Most patients can lead a fairly normal life within 10–15 days, although full recovery and complete adaptation of the tissues take several weeks. Full recovery comes between 3 and 6 months.

Can I finance a Mommy Makeover at IdB?

Yes, a Mommy Makeover can be financed with flexible options adapted to each case. Financing is available for up to 12 months interest-free, with extended plans of up to 48 months, making the treatment accessible in a convenient, gradual way.
