What is lip micropigmentation?
Lip micropigmentation is a non-invasive medical-aesthetic treatment that deposits pigment in the superficial layer of the lip to redefine the contour, unify the color, restore the lost cupid's bow, and give a juicy and luminous tone to the lower third of the face.
It is a long-lasting alternative to lip makeup, especially suitable for people with pale, asymmetrical lips, loss of definition due to age, natural hypopigmentation, or lip scars. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, it does not increase lip volume: it exclusively works on the chromatic dimension and profile definition.
At Instituto de Benito, the treatment is performed after a personalized assessment to decide tone, technique, and design based on each patient's facial features and makeup habits.
Types of lip micropigmentation
Watercolor lips
It is the star technique of the treatment. The pigment is applied in a diffused manner over the entire lip surface, without a hard outline, mimicking the effect of a lip tint or colored gloss. The result is a lip that looks naturally colored even without makeup, with a luminous and rejuvenating finish.
It is ideal for patients with dull, pale, or sun-worn lips who want to regain youthful color without it being noticeable that something has been done.

Watercolor with contour redefinition
A variant of watercolor lips where, in addition to the diffused filling, the vermilion border and cupid's bow are precisely worked on. It is the option when the lip contour has blurred with age, there are marked asymmetries, or the sharpness of the bow has been lost. It allows reconstructing the lip line without the "painted" look of the old "lip lining" of the 90s.

Camouflage of hypopigmentations or lip scars
Indicated for patients with light spots on the lip, sequelae of recurrent herpes, surgical scars (postoperative cleft lip, trauma) or lip vitiligo. Here micropigmentation has a clearly paramedical component and is planned as selective chromatic reconstruction.

What does the lip micropigmentation treatment consist of?
The treatment uses a digital dermograph and high-quality pigments, calibrated for lip tissue (more vascularized and faster healing than facial skin). It is completed in two sessions separated by 6–8 weeks: the first for design and initial pigmentation, and the second for reinforcement to consolidate the final color intensity.
Personalized assessment:

Before the treatment, an assessment with the specialist analyzes the shape of the lip, the current contour, the base tone, medical history (recurrent cold sores, surgeries, allergies), makeup habits, and aesthetic goals. The assessment costs €50, deductible from the treatment.
Pigment test and tone selection

Color selection is the most delicate step of this treatment. It is decided together with the patient, always recommending a tone one point below what is initially chosen: the lip contributes its own tone and the pigment appears more intense once integrated. We work with a broad palette that covers from nudes to pinks, corals, and berries, adjusted to the skin undertone and hair color.
Cold sore prophylaxis

If you have a history of recurrent cold sores, oral antiviral prophylaxis is prescribed before and after the treatment. Micropigmentation is a classic trigger for outbreaks, and this step is non-negotiable to avoid reactivations that compromise the result.
In-office treatment

The session lasts between 90 and 150 minutes. A topical anesthetic cream is applied to the lip, making the procedure practically painless despite the lip being a more sensitive area than the eyebrow. We work with a digital dermograph and sterile single-use needles.
Second session and progressive results

After 6–8 weeks of healing (during which 40–60% of the pigment is lost, which is expected due to the higher cellular regeneration of the lip tissue), a reinforcement session is performed. Here, the color is intensified, symmetry is corrected, and the final result is defined. The duration of the treatment ranges from 18 to 36 months, depending on skin type and sun exposure.

What is the price of lip micropigmentation treatment
350€
The price of the complete lip micropigmentation treatment at Instituto de Benito is 350€, and includes:
- The initial design and pigmentation session.
- The touch-up session at 6–8 weeks, where the final color is set.
- Access to follow-up consultation during the healing process.
Fixed price for aesthetic techniques (watercolor lips and watercolor with contour redefinition).
If your case requires antiviral prophylaxis (history of recurrent cold sores), the doctor will prescribe it during the assessment: the prescription is independent of the treatment price.
If your case requires prior depigmentation of a previous work, that treatment is billed separately (see micropigmentation removal page).
Are you suitable for a lip micropigmentation treatment?
- 01

- 03
Lip asymmetries
Helps visually rebalance lips with asymmetries without the need for hyaluronic acid filler.
- 04
Scars or hypopigmentation
Indicated to camouflage the aftermath of herpes, lip surgeries, or light spots on the lip.

Always perfect lips

Risks and possible side effects of lip micropigmentation
Lip micropigmentation is a safe treatment when performed in a medical-aesthetic environment with certified materials and proper prophylaxis. However, it requires specific considerations that differentiate it from other micropigmentations.
Absolute contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Uncontrolled diabetes.
- Active treatment with anticoagulants (check with doctor).
- Active cold sores (must be healed and under prophylaxis).
- Autoimmune diseases in active phase.
- Confirmed allergy to pigments.
- Oncological treatments without medical discharge.
Common side effects (mild and transient)
- Marked lip swelling in the first 24–48h.
- Very intense tone at the beginning that fades with healing.
- Sensitivity to cold, heat, or acidic foods for a few days.
- Fine peeling of the lip between days 3 and 10.
Uncommon effects
- Localized allergic reactions (prevented with prior pigment test if there is a history).
- Color changes due to excessive sun exposure or unpredictable skin quality.
Prior medical assessment allows identifying contraindications and planning the treatment with maximum safety.

Frequently asked questions about micropigmentation
How much does lip micropigmentation cost?
€350 for the complete treatment. Includes the initial session and the touch-up session at 6–8 weeks.
How many sessions are necessary?
Two: the first for design and initial pigmentation, and a second 4–6 weeks later to set the intensity. An annual or biennial touch-up maintains the result.
Does lip micropigmentation hurt?
The lip is more sensitive than other areas, but the treatment is practically painless with surface anesthetic cream. There may be a slight pinching sensation.
How long do the results last?
Between 18 and 36 months. The lip heals faster than the eyebrow and the pigment integrates differently.
Does lip micropigmentation increase volume?
No. It only changes the color and contour. To increase volume, a complementary treatment with hyaluronic acid is performed.
What if I have recurrent cold sores?
Antiviral prophylaxis is essential before and after the treatment. Without it, the risk of reactivation during healing is high.
Can I get micropigmentation if I have had lip surgery (cleft lip, surgery)?
Yes, it is one of the most effective indications. It is planned as selective chromatic reconstruction after discharge from the surgeon.
Does it look artificial?
No, if the tone is chosen well. The watercolor lips offer a natural finish indistinguishable from a lip tint. The artificial look was the 'lip liner' from decades ago, which is no longer practiced.
When can I return to my daily routine?
Immediately, respecting the care for the first 7–10 days (no hot/acidic foods, no kissing, no sun exposure).
Is it reversible?
Yes. If the result is not convincing or you wish to remove it, a pigment removal treatment is performed.
Is it compatible with bot*x or hyaluronic acid?
Yes, they are complementary treatments. It is recommended to space the sessions at least 2 weeks apart.
