What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a chronic fat tissue disease that causes an abnormal and painful accumulation of fat, mainly in the legs and, in some cases, in the arms, sparing the hands and feet. This condition is not related to obesity and cannot be corrected with diet or exercise.
The surgical treatment of lipedema through specialized liposuction allows reducing the volume of the affected areas, relieving pain, improving mobility, and restoring a more harmonious and functional silhouette, with a positive impact both aesthetically and on the patient's quality of life.
Types of lipedema
Type I lipedema (hips and buttocks)
The accumulation of fat is mainly located in the hips, buttocks, and pelvis, keeping thighs and legs relatively proportionate. It is usually one of the initial forms.

Type II lipedema (up to the knees)
The fat extends from the hips to the knees, creating a disproportionate increase in thigh volume. The knees often present a characteristic fold.

Type III lipedema (up to the ankles)
It affects hips, thighs, and entire legs, reaching up to the ankles, but sparing the feet. It is one of the most advanced and visible forms.

Type IV lipedema (arms)
Type IV lipedema is characterized by the abnormal and symmetrical accumulation of fat in the arms.

What is the lipedema process like?
The surgical treatment of lipedema consists of specialized liposuction (WAL or PAL techniques) where a tumescent solution is infiltrated to protect the lymphatic vessels before removing the diseased and fibrotic fat from the limbs. Using low-pressure cannulas, the surgeon decompresses the tissues by eliminating the fatty nodules that cause pain and inflammation, focusing on improving mobility and the health of the circulatory system rather than purely aesthetic purposes. The process concludes with the immediate use of flat-knit compression garments and lymphatic drainage sessions to facilitate fluid removal and ensure proper skin recovery.
Assessment and understanding of lipedema

The process begins with a specialized medical assessment, where the diagnosis of lipedema is confirmed, its type and stage are determined, and the affected areas are analyzed. This consultation is conducted with the specialist who will handle your case and allows for resolving doubts and understanding the treatment clearly and realistically. To book the appointment, a fee of €80 must be paid in advance.
Preparation for the intervention

Before the intervention, the procedure is carefully planned, defining the areas to be treated, the volume of fat to be removed, and whether the treatment will be carried out in one or several sessions, always adapting to the evolution of lipedema and the needs of each patient.
The intervention

The surgery is performed in state-of-the-art operating rooms, under general anesthesia or sedation, with continuous patient monitoring. The procedure is carried out by a specialist with over 30 years of experience in body surgery and lipedema treatment.
Comfortable recovery

After the intervention, a progressive recovery phase begins. At the Instituto de Benito, we have developed an exclusive protocol that significantly reduces pain, inflammation, and postoperative discomfort, facilitating a more comfortable and controlled recovery.

What is the cost of lipedema treatment?
The indicative price of surgical treatment for lipedema at the Instituto de Benito starts from €4,500, and may vary depending on various clinical factors that determine the final cost of the procedure.
Are you suitable for lipedema treatment?
Surgical treatment for lipedema is indicated for individuals suffering from this fatty tissue disease who wish to reduce pathological volume, relieve pain, improve mobility, and regain a more harmonious shape of the limbs when these symptoms cannot be controlled with conservative measures.
It is especially suitable if:
- 01
Persistent pain in the legs or arms
When there is chronic pain, sensitivity to touch, or constant discomfort affecting your daily life and not improving with conservative treatments.
- 02
Feeling of heaviness and continuous swelling
If you notice your limbs feeling heavy, swollen, or with permanent tension, even when you get up in the morning.
- 03
Progressive increase in limb volume
When lipedema continues to progress over time, causing increasing disproportion and functional limitation.
- 04
Limitation to move or exercise
If the volume, pain, or friction between the legs makes it difficult to walk, run, or perform physical activity normally.
- 05
Does not improve with diet or exercise
When you have tried dietary changes, exercise, or conservative treatments and the lipedema does not respond.
- 06
Impact on your quality of life and emotional well-being
If lipedema affects how you feel about your body, your clothes, your confidence, or your social life, in addition to the physical symptoms.

Frequently asked questions about lipedema
What results can I expect?
The main goal is to reduce pain, heaviness, and pathological volume, improve mobility and quality of life. Aesthetically, a better shape and proportion of the limbs is also achieved. The result progressively consolidates over the 3 to 6 months following the procedure.
Does lipedema surgery hurt a lot?
Discomfort is usually mild or moderate and well-controlled with medication. Thanks to advanced protocols like Synapta®, the postoperative period is generally much more manageable than in conventional liposuction.
Is lipedema permanently cured with surgery?
Surgery does not cure the disease, but it significantly reduces its symptoms and impact on daily life. In most cases, it helps stop progression and greatly improves quality of life.
What risks does the surgical treatment of lipedema entail?
It is a safe procedure when performed in specialized centers and by expert surgeons, but like any surgery, it involves potential risks that must be known.
At the Instituto de Benito, safety is a priority and all procedures are carried out under strict medical protocols.
Most common risks (and generally mild)
- Swelling and bruising: normal during the first weeks.
- Pain or pressure sensation: temporary and controllable with medication.
- Seroma: fluid accumulation that can be reabsorbed or easily drained.
- Temporary alterations in sensitivity.
- Mild contour irregularities during the tissue adaptation phase.
Uncommon risks
- Postoperative infection.
- Delayed healing or opening of small points.
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia.
- Need for touch-up or second session in very extensive cases.
How many sessions are necessary?
It depends on the extent and stage of the lipedema. In some cases, one session is enough; in others, it is safer and more effective to divide the treatment into several phases.
When will I be able to return to normal life?
Most patients can lead a fairly normal life in 7–14 days, although full recovery and tissue stabilization takes several weeks.
Is it mandatory to wear compression garments?
Yes. The use of medical compression garments is a fundamental part of the treatment and proper recovery.
Can I exercise after the treatment?
Light activity is resumed progressively. More intense exercise is usually allowed from 6–8 weeks, depending on progress.
What happens if I gain or lose weight afterwards?
Moderate weight changes do not usually significantly alter the result, but maintaining a stable weight helps preserve the benefits of the treatment.
Is the result permanent?
The removed fat does not return, but lipedema is a chronic disease, so maintaining healthy habits and medical follow-up is key to maintaining long-term results.
