Lipedema is a chronic disease of fatty tissue that causes an abnormal and painful accumulation of fat, mainly in the legs and, in some cases, in the arms, sparing the hands and feet. This condition is not related to obesity and cannot be corrected with diet or exercise.
The surgical treatment of lipedema through specialized liposuction allows for the reduction of volume in the affected areas, alleviates pain, improves mobility, and restores a more harmonious and functional silhouette, with a positive impact both aesthetically and on the patient's quality of life.
Types of lipedema
The accumulation of fat is mainly located in the hips, buttocks, and pelvis, keeping the thighs and legs relatively proportioned. It is usually one of the initial forms.
The fat extends from the hips to the knees, creating a disproportionate increase in thigh volume. The knees often present a characteristic fold.
It affects the hips, thighs, and entire legs, reaching up to the ankles, but sparing the feet. It is one of the most advanced and visible forms.
Type IV Lipedema is characterized by the abnormal and symmetrical accumulation of fat in the arms.
The surgical treatment of lipedema consists of specialized liposuction (WAL or PAL techniques) where a tumescent solution is infiltrated to protect the lymphatic vessels before removing the diseased and fibrotic fat from the limbs. Using low-pressure cannulas, the surgeon decompresses the tissues by eliminating the fatty nodules that cause pain and inflammation, focusing on improving mobility and the health of the circulatory system rather than purely aesthetic purposes. The process concludes with the immediate use of flat-knit compression garments and lymphatic drainage sessions to facilitate fluid removal and ensure proper skin recovery.
The process begins with a specialized medical assessment, where the diagnosis of lipedema is confirmed, its type and stage are determined, and the affected areas are analyzed. This consultation is conducted with the specialist who will handle your case and allows for resolving doubts and understanding the treatment clearly and realistically. To book the appointment, a fee of €80 must be paid in advance.
Before the intervention, the procedure is carefully planned, defining the areas to be treated, the volume of fat to be removed, and whether the treatment will be carried out in one or several sessions, always adapting to the evolution of lipedema and the needs of each patient.
The surgery is performed in state-of-the-art operating rooms, under general anesthesia or sedation, and with continuous patient monitoring. The procedure is carried out by a specialist with more than 30 years of experience in body surgery and lipedema treatment.

Light activity is resumed progressively. More intense exercise is usually allowed from 6–8 weeks, depending on the evolution.
