What is mentoplasty?
Mentoplasty is a surgery that serves to modify the position or shape of the chin: it can be advanced, retracted, or rounded depending on the case. To enlarge the chin, the simplest method is usually to place a silicone prosthesis through a small incision inside the mouth, with local anesthesia. The stitches remain inside and fall out on their own; the patient is usually swollen for a few days, but can resume normal life in 3-4 days.
Another option, performed by maxillofacial surgeons, involves moving the chin bone itself (advancing or shortening it) instead of using a prosthesis. This technique is a bit longer and the incision larger, although it is also done inside the mouth.
Types of Mentoplasty
Augmentation Mentoplasty
Indicated when the chin is under-projected or retracted. It can be performed by placing an implant or by advancing the bone itself to improve the facial profile and balance the face.

Reduction Mentoplasty
Recommended when the chin is too prominent or bulky. It involves reducing and reshaping the bone to achieve a softer face.

Remodeling or Osteotomy Mentoplasty
Used to reposition the chin bone itself (advance, retract, or center it) and correct asymmetries or disproportions, achieving a more precise and natural result.

What does a chin surgery involve at IdB?
The mentoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that allows modifying the shape, size, or position of the chin to improve facial harmony and profile balance. It can be performed to increase, reduce, advance, retract, or redefine the chin according to the anatomical needs of each patient.
There are two main techniques. The first involves placing a chin prosthesis, generally made of biocompatible silicone, through a small incision inside the mouth. This procedure is usually performed with local anesthesia or sedation, allows for quick improvement of chin projection, and does not leave visible external scars.
Personalized medical assessment

The evaluation will always be carried out with the surgeon who will perform your procedure. In this consultation, the facial structure, chin projection, profile, facial proportions, and your aesthetic goals are analyzed.
To book the appointment, a payment of 80 € must be made in advance.
Preparation for the procedure

Preoperative medical tests are conducted and all necessary instructions are provided to ensure you arrive at the surgery with maximum safety and peace of mind.

Frequently asked questions about chin surgery
What results can I expect?
A more balanced, harmonious, and proportionate facial profile, with a chin adapted to the proportions of your face. The final result is appreciated between 6 weeks and 3 months, when the tissues have completely settled.
Does chin surgery hurt a lot?
Discomfort is usually mild or moderate and is effectively controlled with medication and advanced recovery protocols. Most patients resume their usual routine in 5 to 7 days.
Will there be visible scars?
In most cases, no. Incisions are usually made inside the mouth or in very inconspicuous areas under the chin, so the scars are practically imperceptible over time.
What are the risks of mentoplasty?
Mentoplasty is a safe procedure when performed in specialized centers and by accredited surgeons. However, like any surgery, it involves certain potential risks.
At the Instituto de Benito, safety is a priority and all procedures are carried out under strict medical and control protocols, minimizing complications.
Most common risks (generally mild)
- Most common risks (generally mild)
- Hematoma or bleeding: accumulation of blood under the skin; usually resolves with medical control.
- Temporary swelling and discomfort: normal during the first few days; decreases progressively.
- Sensitivity alterations: numbness or hypersensitivity in the chin area, almost always temporary.
- Mild asymmetries: small differences during the healing process.
- Prolonged edema: swelling that may take a few weeks to completely disappear.
Uncommon risks
- Postoperative infection: uncommon thanks to asepsis measures and preventive antibiotics.
- Opening of stitches or delayed healing.
- Allergic reaction or intolerance to anesthesia or surgical materials.
- Displacement or problems with the implant (if an implant is used).
- Need for surgical touch-up in very specific cases.
Is the result permanent?
Yes. Both in techniques with implants and in bone remodeling, the result is stable and long-lasting over time.
Is the implant noticeable to the touch or sight?
No. Current implants are designed to integrate naturally with tissues, offering a completely natural appearance and feel.
When can I exercise or sunbathe?
Exercise: progressively from 3–4 weeks. Sun: after 4–6 weeks, always with high sun protection in the area.
Can I combine chin surgery with other surgeries?
Yes. It is common to combine it with rhinoplasty, double chin liposuction, or other facial procedures, always after personalized medical evaluation.
What happens if I gain or lose weight afterward?
Weight changes do not usually significantly affect the result of chin surgery, as the correction is mainly done on the bone structure or with an implant.
How long does complete recovery take?
Most patients resume their normal life in 5–7 days, although the final result is consolidated around 6–12 weeks.
