What are tuberous breasts?
The tuberous breasts are a congenital alteration in breast development that affects the shape, volume distribution, and in many cases, the symmetry of the breasts. They are characterized by a narrow breast base, incomplete tissue development, and an elongated or tubular shape, often accompanied by dilated or herniated areolas.
This condition is not only aesthetic but also structural, and it can affect the self-esteem and body perception of the person who has it.
What types of tuberous breasts exist
Mild tuberous breasts (Grade I)
They mainly affect the lower inner part of the breast. The breast shows a slight lack of development at the base, with a somewhat elongated shape and, in some cases, a slight herniation of the areola. The asymmetry is usually discreet.

Moderate tuberous breasts (Grade II)
There is a greater development deficit at the base of the breast, affecting both the lower inner and outer parts. The tubular shape is more evident, there is usually greater separation between the breasts, and the areola may be more dilated or prominent.

Severe tuberous breasts (Grade III)
It is characterized by very limited development of the breast base in all its quadrants. The breast has a clearly tubular shape, with little volume, marked herniation of the areola, and often significant asymmetry between both breasts.

Very severe tuberous breasts (Grade IV)
Advanced form of tuberous breast characterized by strong constriction of the breast base, poor tissue development, marked herniation of the areola, and overall alteration of the breast shape, which usually requires complex surgical correction.

What does a tuberous breast correction at IdB involve?
Tuberous breast surgery is a fully personalized procedure aimed at correcting tissue constriction, reshaping the breast, and achieving a more rounded and natural shape. The intervention may include the release of the fibrous ring that prevents normal development, redistribution of breast tissue, reduction of the areola size, and, in many cases, the placement of breast implants to add volume and improve projection.
Personalized medical assessment

The assessment is always carried out with the surgeon who will perform your intervention. In this consultation, the type and degree of tuberous breast, skin quality, existing volume, possible asymmetries, and your aesthetic expectations are analyzed. To book the appointment, a fee of €80 must be paid in advance.
Preparation for the intervention

Preoperative medical tests are conducted, all necessary instructions are given, and the patient is prepared to approach the surgery with maximum safety and peace of mind.

Frequently asked questions about tuberous mammoplasty
What results can I expect?
A more rounded, harmonious, and proportionate breast, with a natural shape and better volume distribution. The final result is seen between 3 and 6 months, when the tissues have fully adapted.
Does tuberous breast surgery hurt a lot?
Discomfort is usually mild or moderate and is effectively controlled with medication and advanced recovery protocols. Most patients return to their usual routine in 7 to 10 days.
Can I breastfeed after surgery?
In most cases, yes. Current techniques are designed to preserve the mammary gland and ducts, although each case is evaluated individually in consultation.
What risks are associated with tuberous breast surgery?
The correction of tuberous breasts is a safe procedure when performed in specialized centers and by surgeons experienced in breast surgery. However, like any surgery, it involves certain potential risks.
At the Instituto de Benito, safety is a priority and all procedures are carried out under strict medical and control protocols, minimizing complications.
Most common risks (generally mild)
- Hematoma or bleeding: accumulation of blood under the skin; usually resolves with medical control or drainage.
- Temporary swelling and discomfort: normal during the first few days; decrease progressively.
- Sensitivity alterations: changes in nipple or breast sensitivity, almost always temporary.
- Mild asymmetries: small differences during the healing process.
- Seroma: accumulation of fluid that can be reabsorbed or easily drained.
Uncommon risks
- Postoperative infection: uncommon thanks to aseptic measures and preventive antibiotics.
- Opening of stitches or delayed healing: may be due to skin tension or individual factors.
- Allergic reaction or intolerance to anesthesia or surgical materials.
- Capsular contracture: if implants are used, the body may form a fibrous capsule that in rare cases requires revision.
- Need for surgical touch-up: in very specific cases to optimize symmetry or final shape.
Is it necessary to have implants to correct tuberous breasts?
Not always. In some cases, it is enough to reshape the tissue itself, and in others, it is recommended to add implants to achieve a more balanced volume and shape. It is decided on a personalized basis.
Will there be visible scars?
Incisions are made in strategic and less visible areas, usually around the areola or in the breast fold, and over time they tend to be discreet.
When can I exercise or sunbathe?
Exercise: progressively from 4–6 weeks. Sun or beach: after 8 weeks, always with high sun protection on the scars.
Can I combine this surgery with other treatments?
Yes. It is often combined with breast augmentation, mastopexy (lift), or other corrections, always after a personalized medical evaluation.
What happens if I lose or gain weight afterwards?
Moderate weight changes do not usually significantly alter the result. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve the aesthetic result in the long term.
How long does full recovery take?
Most patients resume their normal life in 7–10 days, although the final result is consolidated around 3 months.
Can tuberous breasts be financed at Instituto de Benito?
We offer financing options so you can undergo your tuberous breast treatment with total comfort. You can finance up to 12 months interest-free or extend the term up to 60 months.
