Lip micropigmentation is a non-invasive medical-aesthetic treatment that deposits pigment in the superficial layer of the lip to redefine the contour, even out the color, restore a lost Cupid's bow and bring a fresh, luminous tone back to the lower third of the face.
It is a long-lasting alternative to lip makeup, particularly suited to people with pale or asymmetrical lips, loss of definition due to age, natural hypopigmentation or lip scars. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, it does not add volume to the lip: it works exclusively on color and on the definition of the lip line.
At Instituto de Benito, the treatment is performed after a personalized consultation to decide on the shade, technique and design based on each patient's facial features and makeup habits.
Types of lip micropigmentation
This is the signature technique of the treatment. The pigment is applied in a soft, diffused way across the whole surface of the lip, with no hard outline, mimicking the effect of a lip tint or a colored gloss. The result is a lip that looks naturally colored even without makeup, with a luminous, rejuvenating finish.
It is ideal for patients with dull, pale or sun-worn lips who want to recover a youthful color without it being obvious that they have had anything done.
A variation of watercolor lips in which, in addition to the diffused fill, the vermilion border and the Cupid's bow are worked on with precision. It is the option to choose when the lip contour has blurred with age, there are marked asymmetries or the Cupid's bow has lost its sharpness. It allows the lip line to be rebuilt without the “painted-on” look of the old “lip liner” tattoo of the 90s.
Indicated for patients with light patches on the lip, marks left by recurrent cold sores, surgical scars (repaired cleft lip, trauma) or lip vitiligo. Here micropigmentation has a clearly paramedical component and is planned as a selective color reconstruction.
The treatment uses a digital dermograph and high-quality pigments, calibrated for lip tissue (more vascularized and faster to heal than facial skin). It is completed in two sessions 6–8 weeks apart: the first for design and initial pigmentation, and the second a touch-up to consolidate the final intensity of the color.
Before the treatment, a consultation with the specialist assesses the shape of the lip, the current contour, the base tone, your medical history (recurrent cold sores, surgeries, allergies), your makeup habits and your aesthetic goals. The consultation costs €50, which is deducted from the price of the treatment.
Choosing the color is the most delicate step of this treatment. It is decided together with the patient, always recommending a shade one step lighter than the one initially chosen: the lip contributes its own tone and the pigment looks more intense once it has settled. We work with a wide palette ranging from nudes to pinks, corals and berries, matched to your skin undertone and hair color.
If you have a history of recurrent cold sores, prophylaxis with oral antivirals is prescribed before and after the treatment. Micropigmentation is a classic trigger for outbreaks, and this step is non-negotiable in order to avoid reactivations that compromise the result.
The session lasts between 90 and 150 minutes. A topical anesthetic cream is applied to the lip, so the procedure is virtually painless even though the lip is a more sensitive area than the eyebrow. We work with a digital dermograph and sterile single-use needles.
After 6–8 weeks of healing (during which 40–60% of the pigment is lost, which is expected given the faster cell turnover of lip tissue), the touch-up session takes place. This is when the color is intensified, symmetry is corrected and the final result is defined. The treatment lasts between 18 and 36 months, depending on skin type and sun exposure.
The price of the complete lip micropigmentation treatment at Instituto de Benito is €350, and it includes:
Fixed price for the aesthetic techniques (watercolor lips and watercolor with contour redefinition).
If your case requires antiviral prophylaxis (a history of recurrent cold sores), the doctor will prescribe it at the consultation: the prescription is separate from the price of the treatment.

Lip micropigmentation is a safe treatment when performed in a medical-aesthetic setting with certified materials and appropriate prophylaxis. However, it calls for specific considerations that set it apart from other types of micropigmentation.
