Fat or gland? How to get rid of male chest fat

It depends on the cause. If it is only fat, losing weight or liposuction may be enough; if there is breast gland, the only way to remove it is surgery, with liposuction when the gland is soft or with a small incision at the edge of the areola.

The first step is to know what is underneath: fat, gland or both. They look similar from the outside but are not treated the same way, which is why we always start with an examination.

Why do some men have excess chest tissue?

“Gynecomastia can be caused by an increase in breast fat, by an increase in both fat and breast gland, or only by excess breast gland,” explains Dr. Orestes Fernández, a plastic surgeon specialising in body contouring.

  • Fat only (pseudogynecomastia): it is usually linked to being overweight and improves with weight loss.
  • Fat and gland: the most common case we see.
  • Gland only: a firmer lump behind the areola that does not change with weight loss. It can appear in adolescence, with some medicines or with anabolic steroid use.

How are the fat and the gland removed?

With surgery, in two ways depending on the type of tissue:

  • Liposuction: “treatment can be done with liposuction equipment to remove the fat and the gland, if the gland is soft enough.” The scars are minimal.
  • Half-moon incision: when the gland is firm, it is removed through a small incision “whose scar sits on the border between the breast area and the edge of the areola,” where it is barely visible.

Both are often combined. The whole process, from assessment to recovery, is on our page on gynecomastia surgery.

Can male chest size be reduced without surgery?

Only if it is fat. Losing weight and strength training reduce chest fat and define the pectoral muscle. The gland, however, does not disappear with diet or exercise: if there is still volume behind the areola after losing weight, it is gland and the solution is surgical.

If the chest has grown suddenly, hurts or only one side has grown, see a doctor first.

Frequently asked questions about excess chest tissue in men

How can a man get rid of chest fat?

If it is only fat, with weight loss and exercise. If it does not go down, or if there is gland, with chest liposuction, which removes the fat and soft gland with minimal scars.

How can a man reduce the size of his chest?

It depends on what it is made of. Fat is reduced by losing weight or with liposuction; the gland can only be removed with surgery, by liposuction if it is soft or through a small incision at the edge of the areola.

Is it possible to slim down the chest?

Chest fat does go down when you lose weight, but the gland does not. If there is still firm volume behind the areola after losing weight, it is gland.

How can a man lose chest fat without surgery?

With a diet that allows fat loss and strength training for the chest. That works when the excess is fat; if there is gland, there is no non-surgical alternative.

How much does it cost to remove excess male chest tissue?

Gynecomastia surgery costs from €6,500 (VAT not included). We explain what the price depends on in gynecomastia price.
