Hyaluronic acid in aesthetic medicine: what it is used for and treatment areas

Hyaluronic acid is a substance the body produces naturally and that, in aesthetic medicine, is injected to hydrate the skin, fill wrinkles and restore facial volume lost with age.

Ácido hialurónico en medicina estética

Hyaluronic acid is a substance the body produces naturally and that, in aesthetic medicine, is injected to hydrate the skin, fill wrinkles and restore facial volume lost with age. Because it is biocompatible and resorbable, its safety profile is high and its effects are reversible. Results are visible immediately and last between 6 and 18 months depending on the area treated and the type of product.

At Instituto de Benito we use it daily in facial and body treatments, always administered by doctors and with CE-marked products. In this guide we explain exactly what it is, what the scientific evidence says and which areas can be treated.

Combining treatments: the role of hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid does not compete with other aesthetic medicine treatments: it complements them. In a complete facial rejuvenation plan it is common to combine it according to each patient's goal:

  • Collagen inducers and polylactic acid: instead of filling, they stimulate the production of your own collagen. They are the option when the goal is to improve the overall quality and firmness of the skin rather than a specific volume.
  • Facial polynucleotides: they regenerate tissue at the cellular level and are often used as a preliminary step or complement to hyaluronic acid in damaged skin or delicate areas such as the under-eye area.
  • Ultherapy: it tightens the skin with focused ultrasound, without injections. It is the ideal complement when there is skin laxity: Ultherapy tightens, hyaluronic acid restores volume.
  • Thread lift: threads reposition sagging tissue; hyaluronic acid restores volume. Sagging and volume loss usually go together, which is why the two treatments are frequently combined.

Safety: what you should know before having hyaluronic acid injections

  • It is a medical procedure. It must be performed by a doctor trained in facial anatomy, in a licensed medical facility.
  • The product matters. Always insist on products with CE marking and traceability (you should be able to know which brand and batch has been injected).
  • The usual side effects are mild: slight swelling, redness or bruising at the injection site that disappear within a few days.
  • It is reversible. If the result is not as expected or a complication arises, it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
  • No time off work is needed: you can go about your normal life the same day, avoiding intense exercise, extreme heat and makeup for the first 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions about hyaluronic acid

How long does hyaluronic acid last?

Between 6 and 18 months depending on the area, the density of the product and each patient's metabolism. In areas with a lot of movement, such as the lips, it is resorbed sooner (6-12 months); in support areas, such as the cheekbones or jawline, it can last 12-18 months.

Is hyaluronic acid treatment painful?

Discomfort is minimal. Most products contain an anesthetic (lidocaine), and in sensitive areas numbing cream is also applied. The session lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.

When do you see results from hyaluronic acid?

The filling effect is immediate. The final result can be seen at 7-15 days, when the slight initial swelling disappears and the product integrates into the tissue.

Is hyaluronic acid safe?

Yes, provided it is administered by a doctor using approved products. It is biocompatible, resorbable and reversible, which makes it one of the injectable treatments with the best safety profile in aesthetic medicine.

What is the difference between hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin?

They are different, complementary treatments. Hyaluronic acid fills and adds volume (static wrinkles); botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles (dynamic expression lines). You can find more detail in our anti-wrinkle treatment.
